Docdump's Rules of Landfill Operation

Day to day operational practices have
a big effect on maintenance requirements,
during both the active phase and the long term care phase

Good landfill operation requires attention to proper management
of waste materials, soil, water, air, people and equipment

If you keep contaminants out of the system,
you won't find them in your leachate (or groundwater)

Proper waste screening is as much a safety issue as it is an environmental one

Compaction is generally a good thing for landfill operators

Water is generally a bad thing for landfill operators

Different wastes require different strategies

Periodic addition of soil cover layers generally benefits landfill operations
(if it is the right kind of soil)

Plan ahead as much as possible and make sure everybody knows what to do

An Operations Plan left on the shelf won't do its job
